Building the Foundation for Literacy Success: MGT’s Science of Reading Approach

When school districts reach out to MGT for support with literacy, they’re searching for something deeper—something that aligns research, practice, and systems in a way that truly transforms student outcomes.

The Science of Reading (SoR) provides a powerful, research grounded blueprint, but implementing it well requires more than a new curriculum or a series of professional learning sessions.

It requires a partner who understands the complexity of system level change and knows how to build structures that endure while honoring the lived experiences of educators and their students.

That’s where MGT steps in.

Much like constructing a welldesigned building, literacy success depends on the strength and alignment of its foundation. When key components such as instruction, assessment, coaching, leadership, and data are misaligned, instability follows. Not every instructional practice yields the same results, and sustainable improvement does not happen by accident.

We help districts move from fragmented efforts to intentional design by building literacy systems that are coherent, durable, and rooted in how the brain actually learns to read.

Our work blends evidencealigned instructional practices with the leadership, coaching, and data structures needed to ensure those practices are implemented with clarity and consistency across classrooms and schools.

Where the Work Begins: Listening, Learning, and Aligning

Every partnership begins with listening. We engage with district leaders, teachers, and reading specialists to understand their goals, their challenges, and the realities of their classrooms. Across contexts, similar needs emerge. We believe teachers want clarity, leaders want alignment, and everyone wants literacy efforts that truly support student success.

From there, we help districts envision what a fully aligned SoR system can look like—one where Structured Literacy serves as the foundation rather than an addon, and where every student receives the support they need through a strong MultiTiered System of Support (MTSS).

Our literacy specialists, trained through CERI, ALTA, and OrtonGillingham, work side by side with educators to design and strengthen that system. We support schoolwide literacy planning, assessment alignment, data routines, coaching structures, and instructional leadership development to ensure each component reinforces the others.

A District Vignette: Strengthening the Literacy Infrastructure

In one midsized district, leaders had invested in a new reading curriculum but struggled to see consistent results. Teachers felt overwhelmed and uncertain about how to translate the SoR into daily classroom practice. Data meetings were taking place, but the information wasn’t driving instructional decisions.

MGT conducted a districtwide literacy needs assessment, observed classrooms, reviewed assessment systems, and engaged educators at every level. What we found was not a lack of effort but a lack of structural alignment.

Together, we developed a clear implementation roadmap:

  • Structured Literacy expectations were clearly defined and consistently communicated across all schools
  • Coaching cycles were redesigned to emphasize modeling, feedback, and guided practice
  • Assessment systems were aligned so data informed instruction rather than serving as a compliance exercise
  • Leaders received targeted training to effectively support and monitor SoRaligned instruction
  • Teachers enrolled in MGT’s IDAcertified SoR courses to deepen their understanding of phonology, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, morphology, and advanced decoding

Within months, the district began to experience meaningful change. Teachers reported greater confidence in their instructional decisions. Students who had struggled for years began demonstrating measurable gains. Leaders finally had a system in place that supported their literacy goals rather than placing additional strain on them.

This progress didn’t happen overnight. It happened because the district focused on strengthening its literacy foundation and committing to intentional design, alignment, and evidencebased practice.

Empowering Educators Through Knowledge

One of the most powerful shifts we see in districts occurs when teachers understand why specific instructional practices work. MGT’s IDAcertified SoR courses help educators connect research to classroom instruction in ways that are practical, clear, and immediately applicable.

When educators understand how the reading brain works, they’re better equipped to scaffold instruction, respond to student needs, and confidently implement strategies that support longterm literacy growth.

The MGT Difference

MGT doesn’t simply deliver training. We help districts build and sustain systems.

We support districts as they:

  • Create coherent, evidencealigned literacy plans
  • Strengthen MTSS structures
  • Align assessments and data routines
  • Develop instructional leaders
  • Provide individualized coaching
  • Build longterm internal capacity

Our goal is simple: to help districts establish strong literacy foundations that allow every student to become a confident, capable reader.

Ready to Build a Stronger Literacy System?

If your district is ready to move from isolated efforts to a cohesive, evidencealigned literacy system, MGT is ready to partner with you. Whether you’re beginning your SoR journey or looking to strengthen existing work, we bring the expertise and structure needed to build a system that lasts.

Let’s work together to design, strengthen, and sustain the foundation for literacy success.
